Does the fungi survive the winter freeze? More importantly - is it necessary to re-innoculate the soil each season? Thanks

Not really sure. I know that fungi can survive some of nature's toughest extremes, but I'm not sure how hardy myco is.

Spores often survive however the remaining mycorrhizal strands usually die of dessication.

It will survive if you plant a cover crop in the early fall.

Actually the cover crop would need to be selected to serve as host to the correct VAM species. I've been meaning to substantiate my thory that the VAM we need for pumpkins might not survive on a prennial winter hardy cover crop. There is really nothing about VAM that would suggest that this would actually work.
Don't get worried yet. It's nothing but a theory right now.

By winter a pound of mico will be less than a gallon of gas.
