Ok, I need to understand the watering a little better. I guess what would help the most would be to know the signs of watering too much. Since everyones soil is different in structure, how much one person with sandy loam waters could be way different than what someone with heavy clay soil should be watering. Can anyone tell me what the signs of too much water would be? My little girls plant has a vine that has turned yellow with the new growth. It is a much brighter yellow than the pictures in many of the diaries that I have viewed here. Yellow vines, I was informed from here, are a sign of orange pumpkins. (That would be awesome to see) But this yellow is working its way up the stalks. The leaves are still green and the plant has not stopped growing but has slowed to about 2 inches a day vine growth. The vines are 6 feet and starting to show female flowers. (WOO HOO) Just dont seem to find alot for the early signs of over watering or too much fish emulshion or Ironite. Guess what scared me is the color changed overnight and it is not a soft yellow as other plants show. when I give the plants water it is every other day 2 gallons mixed with one teaspoon to a gallon of fish emulshion or 1/2 teaspoon of Ironite alternating. AND... if I am overwatering the plants, will they come back an be ok?

I am sure you are not over watering, quite the contrary, you are under watering, you need to water at least 10' across where the stump is, 5' each way, give it a deep soak, and the roots will go deep, if you water too little you will starve your pumpers and they will be small

I have read it. It appeared you found the problem that got your plants was Pythium. Is pythium the product of overwatering?? My vines are a much brighter yellow than the pictures in your diary. They look alot like the pictures in Duffbeers Diary except for the newest growth. The new growth from all the vines is just now coming out yellow(including the leaves). I will suspend the watering for a day or two ro three to see if this changes anything. the top inch or two in oer patch looks dry but the soil is heavy clay and a poke in the dirt with a garden fork reveals alot of moisture is under the top layer. I will post some pics from today and see if everyone still feels it is a healthy condition. Newbies are a pain in the butt, aren't they?

I mean holding off on the stump watering. I will still give them an overhead spray and moisten the surrounding soil. just wont water around the center of the plant so much.

Pythium is a fungus that grows in a wet environment (something in the patch holding water).
