No!! I've read that they contain a toxin that kills many plants. Is there anything growing under your walnut trees?

I'll second that. My neighbor tried to plant near his walnut tree. It looks as if it has stunted the growth of his pumpkins.

The toxin that Bruiser mentioned is called jugoline, and is extremely harmful to plants, a tree that has jugoline in it is the Black Walnut. Bad Stuff!!!!!!!! Steve

I live where there is lots and lots of walnut trees. The pollen is awful. The leaves aren,t good for your garden . If you have grass growing under them you are lucky. Makes great shade , but you don,t want to plant anything around them.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. This year I started 8 plants and 7 of them were stunted. I attributed this to the cold we had in may, but now it seems I have another reason. Last fall, when I was spreading leaves and such on the patch, a number of bags of black walnut seeds, leaves, etc. got mixed in. So much so that I had black walnuts germinating in my patch. This spring im scratching my head as to why my plants never recovered after it got warm. Now i know... ahhhhhhhh. WIll this toxin wash out of the soil or is it time to relocate??

Well said Chuck. Joze you might be OK. (after a while) Here is an excerpt from the article: "Walnut leaves can be composted because the toxin breaks down when exposed to air, water and bacteria. The toxic effect can be degraded in two to four weeks. In soil, breakdown may take up to two months. Black walnut leaves may be composted separately, and the finished compost tested for toxicity by planting tomato seedlings in it." I'd try to get all of the seedlings out of your patch. (you probably already did this). Just to be safe I'd refrain from adding any else 'walnut' to your patch. Cheers & good luck, Ceis

I'll take it but before you ship it please cut into 3/4" stock, plane it and dry it:) We have little to no walnut around here. Just pine, oak, hickory and a little maple and poplar.
