my 2 cents is that unless you can't water regularly who cares if the roots go deep or not. yes you want nice loose soil for root growth but ... you're not trying to growing drought resistant plants you are trying to grow large pumpkins- right ?
contrasting points of view are welcome

I use soaker hoses for most of my watering. When the temperature get 90+ I use a misting system.

Nothing but overhead watering here. I have 6 Hunter sprinklers set up to cover the entire patch. I water every other day for about 1-2 hours. Set it up on a timer and then it goes off in the heat of the day while I'm at work.

My 800 sqft patch on the south side of my garage is 30 feet from the paved street, the ambient temp around the plant can get to 100+ degrees, I have found that misting is a must, and also keeps the ground evenly moist with out flooding it. The misters along with my "top secret" time/temp water control system is about all I use for watering, and cooling!

I use soaker hoses that i put under the ground. I put it around the mound area 3 times....About 6 inches between each ring....Then I lay the hose along either side of the main vine. I did do some misting last year when the temps got to 93 or better......For this I use a hand held, dial nozzel.....I also watered from the top, but will not do that much more....I had desease from it! I will lay more underground watering.....This keeps alot of the water off of the leaves......Chris

Paperboy....That is the "DREDED" Squash Vine Borer! What i have done in the past is, locate them by the sawdust they leave behind....Take a razzor blade and slice the vine lenth wise untill i see them.....Then slice the Vine Borer! Its harder to do....And you cut some of your vine up but, it is one way to do it. Make sure you dust with "Seven". Another way is befor planting using "Systemic Granuals" that you put in the ground.....Hope this helps somwhat....Chris

Chris, this is the first I have heard of "Systemic Granuals". Give us some more details and where do you purchase the product, and what is the products name?

Len, A systemic granual pesticide is one you apply like a granual fertilizer. The roots absorb it and distribute it through the whole plant, that way every part of the plant is protected and you don't have to worry about it washing off during rain. It only has to be applied every few weeks too. Tom

Most systemic pesticide that i have seen is pretty toxic. I don,t think you can eat or use the item you this on for food. If you are more towards organic side of growing things i would advise you to read the label very carefully on anything that is systemic. Greg C.

I think that you apply it only once tom,in the beginning of the season. And i do remember hearing that you should not use it around vegies that you eat....Chris
