How deep does your water go and how do you know this? What tool/instrument do you use to determine the depth of moist soil?

"What tool/instrument do you use to determine the depth of moist soil?" - a 5" wide and 20" deep hole in the middle of the patch drilled down with a soil drill. It is covered with a 6" diameter round plate that is only removed in order to grab down with your arm to feel how moist the soil is.

Hey, why buy a tool to measure moisture when you've got ten of them at the end of your arm for free :-)
Seriously, though, moisture meters aren't very expensive, are they? But, I doubt most of them go any deeper than six or ten inches. Maybe there are more expensive ones that go deeper and are more accurate, digital etc.

I have about a twelve inch piece of PVC Sch.40 which I can pull to go down in for a dampness check. Pull pipe, check and return pipe to hole. Works fine.

I have a soil moisture tool I bought pretty cheaply from Ebay last spring, works very well, I checked my soil today its been in the 80-90's for the past 2 weeks and ive ONLY watered once and that was a week ago, i checked moisture today first 3 " were dry but as soon as i got down to the 6-7" mark is was full of moisture.
