I'm not trying to grow a thousand pound pumpkin, but I think a nice orange 500 pound range is reasonable. for a second year. 2014 was a flop for me for multiple and preventable reasons. But next year I hope to really kick things up. But what my question is should I just use the 1059 since I already have or is there allot better HD seed. Or is 1059 self not a recommended. I really learned allot from Cecil's presentation at the pumpkin show, and after seeing the accomplishments and the weight increases I'm excited to see all the records and PB"s. Good Luck to everyone and thank you for taking your time to read this. -Joel Young

If I had a 1059 I would grow it . I love orange and the 1059 is a proven orange producer .

I think some of my crosses like the 1048 Engel and now the 1374 Engel will almost always produce a big beautiful orange pumpkin. I will test this theory in 2015.

As far as proven ones go, the 1059 and 811 are probably tops. There are a few 2013 and 2014 seeds that certainly look promising as those older ones go away.

1059 is maybe as good as it gets for consistent howard dill quality color and shape.there are several others that may be as good but like andy says, as far as proven ones go, its likely head of the class for pretty orange.

1059 is the top HD proven orange I have seen in my few short years growing. I have heard about others, but then you'll see that they also grow duds if you search... not the 1059.

I challenge anyone to show me a single dud grown from the 811. I also challenge anyone to show me a pumpkin weighing more than 1295 pounds grown off a 1059 that won a Howard dill award. I haven't done much PR for the 811 lately, mainly because I barely have any seeds left to give out. But they are out there in numbers if you look for them, and it is the most consistent producer of good shape and color since the 603.5 muller.

I was not implying any seed mentioned above produces duds, but many people promote seeds as orange producers that in fact are not consistent. Anyone who wants to grow orange needs to be aware of that and do their homework. As for the 1059, that is just my opinion. If people want to promote their seed, send the guy one.

As some one who only grows Orange and Pretty, I agree that some seeds will throw both orange and ugly. After a while you can get pretty good at choosing unproven seeds, or maybe I am just lucky. We will see what 2015 brings. 1048's when planted result in Howard Dill Awards. I think the 1374 will produce the same.

I am certainly a big fan of the 1059 VM and have grown it 3 times. This last year was probably one of the prettiest and symmetrical that I have grown and was a selfed cross. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=229343
We also have an orange cross that we are looking forward to next year that started as a 993 VM x 1059 VM, which grew the 777. I crossed the 811 Gerhardt into it in 2013 and then back crossed the 1059 in this year. It was a tall pumpkin and just starting to orange up before we took it to our early fair. I think this may be a very nice cross next year.

Hey Luke no worries lol. To be constructive I would say the 777 Young, 1048 Engel and 811 are tops for those looking to win a HD award in 2015. The 1059 yes of course but I know they are in very short supply so be prepared to pay a lot for that seed at auction if any club has one to offer this year. There are a lot of 2014 seeds I will be keeping an eye on!

My 500.5 from 2013 descends from the 1059. It grew a 849 Howard Dill award winner for me in 2014. For years I tried to get an orange line going. It was comical, all the fails,... either the plant would go bad or the color would not arrive. Now I have orange coming out my ears.
Anyway, I would not hesitate to grow either my 500.5 or 849 if you want a pure orange producer.
