Looks like you're going for orange.
The 1409 Whittier I do not see talked about much.
So far as I know, nobody has tried it, but I think it could be a real winner.
The color of the mother I would expect to only show up 50% time, as it was crossed with the 985 Werner, which from what I have seen tends to throw HUGE butt uglies.
The 985 does however contain 1370 Rose genes, and that would mean it could carry genes for better color, that do not express themselves in the 985 itself, but crossed with something that has orange, may mean some of the offspring would too.
The 1409 itself was a brilliant neon orange, at least going by the pictures over at the aggc.
I think it would be worth growing several of them, and self pollinating them, to see if any of its offspring, or even F2's get the color.
I have no idea what kind of seed count Bruce got however, from what I have seen he does not post much online.

Thanks for the advice. I am pretty new to this still and have a lot to learn. I do love orange pumpkins, but want to try to get orange without sacrificing to much size. The 1199 Werner is another that I would really like to try.
