where is the best place to buy phat jack seeds? or what is the best source for the largest field pumpkin seed? Howden? others? anybody know the rules for field pumpkin competitions? I mean, are some people crossing them with prizewinners or big max or other varieties like that? I would think eventually they would get out of the field pumpkin category and into the AG category? maybe i am extending the realm of the seed exchange category--just curious on these issues.

I would say participate in the Giant Veggie seed exchange or ask those growers that grow field pumpkins for size. We had a 118 last year I will let you know how those produce this year.

Bigbear -
Sieger seeds sells the phat jack seed - they are certainly large pumpkins but only a few grow on a very large vine. I also grow Super Herc (Harris seeds) and Contestoga giants for large size. With 15 AG, 15 prizewinners and 15 acres of field pumpkins I have been sticking to mainly hybrid field pumpkins. Linus - I am anxious to see the results of the seeds I got from the exchange last year - they are growing much better this year than last.

I did find the seed at siegers, but you have to have a $100 order and I dont think that will be possible. If you order phat jacks from them next year, i would be interested in getting maybe 100 seeds or something like that and share cost if you are interested at all swaintech. email me jjlorson@yahoo.com

I have three Phat Jack plants in my patch. Not going for 1 big pumpkin but hoping for 3-5 nice sized ones. What is the average # of pumpkins these plants produce- are they like Howdens?

Jeff -My phat jacks usually average about 40-50 pounds with no special attention paid to them. They have a large, dark, sturdy handle and a Howden type shape with a nice dark orange color. Many growers do not like them because there vines are massive and you don't get many pumpkins per plant. I planted 27 varieties pumpkins and gourds this year so phat jack is only one type of many. I consider Howdens "old school" since there are so many hybrids now.
