Hmm, could it be someone is actually looking at breeding in virus resistance?? Maybe there are some breeders here...

As for virus resistance, you can't cross to it like you can some other Cucurbita species.
I did graft atlantic Giant to it this year. The idea was to get a boost from the huge taproot that this species forms. The seedling graft took and grew without supplemental water. It would be interesting to see what a well watered, well established C. foetidissima rootstock could do to an AG. I'll try it if my plants make it through our northern winter. SW you could just drive down the road and give it a try.

emanuele,
I'll start a new thread so we don't end up hijacking Janni's.

Brian -- your insightful but I can walk to it LOL. There are actually several desert gourd species here: C. foetidissima (cyote ears for triangle leaf shape) and IMO invasive, C. palmata (palmata = maple leaf looking), C. digitata (same but more star shaped leaves, Ibervillea sonorae (maybe endangered? because it's a medicinal plant, is classified as Cucurbitaceae but????), and Apodanthera undulata (loco melon). May be more but I've only see a couple of these, They are heat resistant to 110+, drought desitant, desease resistant and while I believe all are dicot, have to agree with brian about crossing, at best it would be dificult ... and even if you did cross, geting the desired traits would add dificulty. Brian, drop me a email: fourd@comcast.net
