My pumpkin prospects are improving today I think. After some reflection on Saturday and stumbling across the genetics behind my pumpkin I concluded that the pumpkin needs significantly more fertilizer, more micronutrients, calcium, and magnesium than I have been giving it. It also helped that I saw Shannon's comment about whether we're trying to just grow pumpkins or if our aspiration is to grow a Giant pumpkin. So I doubled the fertilizer, added some Cal Mag that I ordered at 9 p.m. Saturday (and had on my doorstep at 7 a.m. Sunday), and fed it twice within 24 hours, which I hadn't been doing. It seems to have helped things today. The dimples are much less pronounced and the pumpkin increased from the 4 day, 15# growth average, to 26#'s in the past 30 hours or so. With a little luck, I'll pass my personal best tomorrow too. My mood has also improved significantly as well. I've got a fan on the blossom, stem, and stump right now and will from now as long as it's not raining.
