They test the base of the leaf where it hits the stalk, so I trim stalks and tops to fit in priority envelope, as I usually have soil going in at same time. Grab, squeeze, slice.
Back and forth on whether to do so depending on lab and who you ask, but I always wash my leaves to get rid of surface nutrients and “thingicides”.
