The snow has melted, it's warm (for now), so I was able to dig up some soil for testing. Just wanted to document the first step of the growing season.

A little behind on posting but I planted out 05/16. We had some really cold nights late this May so I covered it with a styrofoam cooler those nights.

No obvious bug problems so far this year. I've been spraying Sevin every few days. Last year the cucumber beetles destroyed my plant.

There's a little vine about to grow out. I wish I had taken more pictures last year. I'm not sure if I'm on track with last year. We've had a lot of rain this spring so I haven't had to water much which is different from last year's drought. I have heavy clay soil so aside from the rain that falls I'm trying not to water too much. Last year I had some vine rot. I'll also be vine-burying less.

I guess I should put here this is from seeds 612 Parks. F: 1753 Ortman M:1775 Liggett.
This is my second year growing so I'm still learning. Based on other diaries I should have put artificial light on it earlier this spring. In central Ohio we've had a lot of rain, overcast, and cold. So I'm behind. Hopefully with some sun big growth happens soon. My deadline is early October so I've got time. And I put extra seeds in the ground yesterday because can't hurt to have a back up. All I'm looking for is a 200lb pumpkin for my county fair.

One more rainy day and then full sun for 6 days so I'm hoping to see big growth in the next week. I've switched from Sevin to BioAdvance because I liked the BioAdvance better last year. I haven't seen any bugs but that doesn't mean they aren't lurking about. Im really really hoping this 6 days of sun coming up gets this thing moving!

612 Parks started indoors 6 weeks ago, planted out 5 weeks ago, and I'm finally seeing vines! I'm still cursing the 30 degree nights we had in late May.

Mystery has grown a lot in 3 days. We had a storm with heavy downpour last night that left it a little beat up but no major damage.

I'm still convinced 612 Parks was somewhat stunted by the cold temps in late May. It's still growing but it's slower than I expected.

Last year (my first year) I vine buried and I was really on top of it but I did get rot. I've got heavy clay soil unfortunately. So this year I'm trying to "stake" the tap roots down. We've had a ton of rain so I feel good about not burying the vine in all the heavy wet clay.

A nice secondary vine is forming and there's a baby pumpkin on the main vine. Two male flowers are open. No bugs in the pumpkin patch but I noticed cucumber beetles on my corn in a different garden. I treat the pumpkins with BioAdvance and everything else with Sevin. I'm gently pinning the taproots and covering them then unpinning when they've taken root. My soil is not suitable for vine burying, yet.
